Elton John had some pretty wild nights of drug use with the late John Lennon back in the day — all of which he lays bare in his new documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late.
The 77-year-old music icon revealed during the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday that he and Lennon indulged in “mountains of coke” in a New York hotel room during the early hours of the morning, per People magazine.
At one point, the Rocket Man singer became convinced the police were at the door, saying, “Is that the police?” as he nervously checked the peephole. Instead, it was famed artist Andy Warhol, whom Lennon declined to let in due to Warhol’s notorious habit of carrying a Polaroid camera everywhere.
Lennon humorously brushed it off, saying, “Like, no thanks. That was the fun part of cocaine.”
While John can laugh about the incident now, he has previously stated that his “biggest regret” was taking drugs. He celebrated 30 years of sobriety in 2020 and has used his recovery to help others.
Reflecting on his journey, John previously shared, “If I hadn’t finally taken the big step of asking for help 30 years ago, I’d be dead.”
